Dear Wyndford readers,
On 11 September, when the last light leaves the mountain, we are not going inside.
We are taking blankets, picnic baskets and telescopes out under the Maluti sky and staying there for a while. Our stargazing weekend is finally here.
We have been waiting for this one
On Friday 11 September, we will be looking properly at the night sky. Not the quick look you give it while walking from the car to the house. A proper one.
Telescopes will be set up, the evening will be guided, and someone who actually knows what they are looking at will help us find the planets, constellations and clusters that most of us have been looking past our whole lives.
No experience needed. You only need to look up.
First, we eat
Before the sky gets completely dark, we will head into the mountain with picnic baskets. Far enough from the farm lights to notice the difference. Not far enough to make dinner feel like a hiking achievement.
We will eat while the valley loses its colour, pull the blankets a little closer as the evening cools, and then let the sky take over.
There are worse ways to spend a Friday night.
Why we’re making a weekend of it
Stargazing is set for Friday 11 September, but there is no reason to pack up and head home right after. Stay through Saturday, let the mountain slow you down properly, and turn one night under the stars into a full weekend away.
So, are you joining us?
Bring a warm jacket. Bring someone you like spending quiet time with. Come for two nights and let the mountain do what it does best after dark.
The sky will be there whether we look or not.
We would rather look.
