May at Wyndford- A quiet month filled with care, connection and whispers of winter

Dear Wyndford Family

After all the long weekends in April, May arrived like a deep breath. It gave us time to look after the farm, tend to small things that matter, and prepare for the colder months ahead.

We hope you’ll enjoy this update from our corner of the Eastern Free State.

A Weekend to Celebrate Mothers

We hosted a lovely Mother’s Day weekend – full of warmth, flowers, and the clink of teacups. It was also the first time we presented a proper high tea at Wyndford. Freshly baked scones, petite sandwiches, sweet crumbles and tartlets… it was a joy to prepare and serve.

This will definitely become a more regular offering. There’s something timeless about slowing down and sharing tea with the people you love.

Restoring the Heart of the Farm

May was quiet in the best way. With fewer guests, we were able to focus on caring for our 105-year-old grande dame.

We carefully removed some of the old ivy that had grown over the front of the main building and coffee shop. Underneath, we found the original sandstone – now restored and sealed, glowing softly in the autumn light.

Repair work also began on the Pevy’s and Belsteen blocks, where water damage from summer rains had crept in. These are slow, thoughtful repairs, but essential to keeping Wyndford strong and steady for years to come.

Wyndford at the Africa Travel Indaba

It was a privilege to represent Wyndford and the Greater Fouriesburg Tourism NPC at the Africa Travel Indaba in Durban. The event was full of energy and purpose. Travel across the continent is slowly returning – and the interest from other African countries was especially exciting.

We had great conversations about rural tourism, slow travel, and what makes our part of the world so unique. The appetite is growing. People are ready to return to places that feel honest, peaceful, and grounded.

A Fond Farewell

This month we also said goodbye to Jenna Bezuidenhout, who leaves Wyndford to join her husband, Lourens, in re-opening a rehabilitation facility.

We believe that couples should walk their journey together, and we wish them both well as they begin this new chapter – one that brings hope and healing to others. Jenna has been a joyful presence at Wyndford and she leaves with our love and gratitude.

Preparing for Winter… and Fire Season

With winter approaching, our fire season begins too. My father, Erard and Shawn designed a new fire-fighter unit for the farm, and we’ll begin cutting firebreaks shortly.

As a family who has spent decades farming in the Free State, we’ve seen our fair share of fires. Please keep our region in your prayers during this time. Preparation makes a difference, but so does community.

Snow on the Horizon

The first forecasts are in, and it looks like snow may arrive on the Malutis from 6 June onward.

There’s something magical about the farm in snow – quiet, still, and blanketed in white. We’ll be watching the skies and stocking up on hot chocolate.

The Little Turtle Menu

We’re working on a new kiddies menu, made with families and full tummies in mind.

It’s called the Little Turtle Menu – and we’d love your input. Whether it’s your child’s favourite holiday meal or a comforting classic you grew up with, we’re listening.

This little project is especially close to our hearts.

We look forward to the snow, the quiet moments, and to welcoming you back soon.

Warm regards
Jandré and the Wyndford Team
